Helpful Guide on Selecting the Highest-Quality Sod

Quality Sod has been in business since 2006, helping homeowners and gardening enthusiasts spruce up their lawns in the best way possible. Keep exploring to get more details on choosing the best sod for your needs.

Our Products

We offer several types of grass, which are all suitable for warm climates. In some cases, we may be able to work with other farms to get a particular variety for your project.

Centipede

This is our best-selling grass sod. It is known for its fine leaf texture and relatively slow growth rate. It has low nitrogen requirements as it typically needs no more than 2 pounds for every 1,000 square feet each year.

Other characteristics include the following:

  • Good Disease and Insect Resistance
  • Low Maintenance Requirement
  • Moderate to Low Shade Tolerance
  • Relatively Easy Installation Process
    Aggressive Coverage
  • Less Wear Tolerance

Centipede grass is also known to have better resistance to chinch bugs and brown patches, making it more inexpensive to maintain than St. Augustine grass. In line with this, the grass can be kept up to heights of 1.0 to 2.0 inches.

St. Augustine

St. Augustine grass is the absolute classic choice. It has wider blades than Centipede grass, with much of the root system above the soil. This makes this grass feel as if you are walking on a lovely carpet that has nice, thick padding.

In terms of maintenance, this type requires more nitrogen than centipede grass. we advise fertilizing about twice a year for optimal growth. Cutting height should be kept between 1.5 to 2.5 inches.

Other characteristics include the following:

  • Aggressive Coverage
  • Good Drought Tolerance
  • Best Shade Tolerance Available

Tifway 419 Bermuda

This type of grass has very fine blades and comes in a very dark green shade, making it ideal for those who want something different. They are typically found on golf tees, nicer baseball diamonds, as well as football and soccer fields.

The Tifway 419 Bermuda is also usually more drought-tolerant than Centipede and St. Augustine. However, this type may require more frequent mowing, with an ideal cutting height of about ¼ to 1 inch.

Empire Zoysia

This premier grass selection is characterized by medium-bladed leaves and a dark green color. It has excellent drought tolerance as well as foot traffic, making it a favorable choice for many, many customers.

It also needs less mowing, meaning less frequent maintenance procedures for homeowners.

Although priced a little higher than Centipede, this variety is exploding in popularity in the Baton Rouge and truly has become the "grass to have"!

How Much Sod Do You Need?

Most lawns are not one big rectangle. This means it might be easier to divide your lawn into smaller sections to get an accurate measurement. Simply multiply each section’s length by its width and then add them all up to get the total area.

We also recommend measuring your lawn in feet as opposed to inches, rods, yards, or acres.

Let’s say you have 5,350 total square feet of outdoor space you’d like to cover with grass. A pallet of our grass covers approximately 450 square feet, so 5350 divided by 450 = 11.88.  This means you would need 12 pallets of grass to cover the entire surface.

Putting more grass on a pallet saves room on a truck, but sacrifices the health of the grass on the bottom.  Be wary of anyone over-stacking pallets simply to save costs.
